Original abstract landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts
Where passing clouds leave their shadows on the land.
As clouds drift across the sky, the light shifts with them, casting shadows that move quietly across the landscape. Cloud Shadows explores these fleeting changes, where pale light and softer darkness mingle, and the familiar land takes on a different mood from one moment to the next.
Pale blues, hints of mauve and soft greens form the basis of the palette, with flecks of brown ink adding subtle contrast and texture. Working with watercolour, acrylic ink, watercolour pencil and collage, I have built up layers of colour, line and fragmented shapes. Washes merge and dissolve, while finer marks and pieces of collage create a surface that reveals more on closer inspection.
Rather than depicting a particular place, the painting offers an impression of the landscape in transition — a moment when sky, light and land seem to shift together.
A small original landscape painting with a quiet, atmospheric quality, Cloud Shadows reflects the changing nature of the landscape and the fleeting details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
