Darkness Rising

Original abstract landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts

A landscape caught between light and shadow.

There is a particular moment in the landscape when the light begins to shift, shadows deepen and the familiar takes on a different mood. Darkness Rising explores that transition, capturing a sense of the land moving towards darkness while traces of light linger within it.

Layers of watercolour, acrylic ink and collage create a surface rich in texture and subtle detail, allowing the painting to develop its own sense of depth and atmosphere. Contrasting marks and tones suggest a landscape in flux, where nothing remains quite as it was and the changing light transforms our perception of place.

A small work with a quiet intensity, Darkness Rising is an exploration of the moods and fleeting moments that make a landscape linger in the memory.
