Abstract, mixed media landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts
Where light moves endlessly across land, sea, and sky.
An expressive small work inspired by the Isle of Skye — a landscape defined as much by its changing light as by its rugged terrain. Land of Shifting Light captures those fleeting transitions when brightness moves across hillsides and shoreline, altering colour, atmosphere, and the very shape of the land from one moment to the next.
Created using oil paint monoprint on paper, the surface is layered with rich tonal variation and expressive mark-making that echoes the movement of weather and light across the landscape. Darker passages suggest distant ridges and coastal forms, while softer, luminous areas emerge through the composition like sunlight breaking briefly through cloud.
Subtle textures and overlapping marks hint at the traces left behind by time and weather — echoes of shifting skies, moving tides, and the changing moods of the land itself. There is both stillness and movement within the piece, reflecting the quiet unpredictability that makes Skye feel at once timeless and ever-changing.
