Salt on the Air

£300.00

Abstract, mixed media landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts

Where wind, tide, and marshland leave their quiet traces upon the landscape.

An expressive work inspired by the North Norfolk coastline — a landscape shaped by salt air, shifting tides, and the subtle textures of the marshes. Salt on the Air captures the quiet atmosphere of these tidal spaces, where weather and water continually leave their marks across the land.

Created using watercolour, ink, and oil pastel on paper, the surface is built through layered washes, delicate tonal shifts, and expressive marks that echo the patterns left behind within the marshland — traces of receding water, wind through reeds, and softened pathways carved by tide and time. The muted palette allows the textures and gestures within the work to emerge gently, evoking the calm rhythm and spaciousness of the Norfolk coast.

The elongated composition draws the eye slowly across the landscape, reflecting the openness of estuary horizons and the horizontal movement of marsh, creek, and sky. There is a quiet restraint within the piece, balanced by subtle moments of energy carried through the layered marks and shifting tones.

Salt on the Air speaks of those familiar coastal moments when the wind carries the scent of sea salt inland and the landscape feels both weathered and deeply still.
