Abstract, mixed media landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts
Where land rises and softens beneath shifting skies.
An expressive small work inspired by the rugged, shifting landscape of the Isle of Skye — where land rises in quiet strength beneath vast, weather-driven skies. The Line of the Hills reflects that moment when the contours of the land reveal themselves through layers of mist and moving light, the horizon forming and dissolving in equal measure.
Built through oil paint monoprint and collage, the surface carries a sense of weight and texture, echoing the solidity of rock and the softening influence of weather. Layered marks suggest distant ridgelines, darkened slopes, and the subtle undulation of ground shaped over time. Hints of tonal variation move across the piece like cloud shadow passing over the hills, while areas of exposed texture speak to the raw, elemental nature of the landscape.
There is a quiet tension held within the work — between permanence and change, structure and atmosphere. It captures that familiar Skye experience of watching the land emerge slowly from cloud, only to be veiled again moments later.
