Marsh at Dusk
Abstract, mixed media landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts
Where fading light settles softly across marsh and tidal water.
An atmospheric work inspired by the North Norfolk coastline — capturing the quiet transition between day and evening as dusk drifts across the marshes. Marsh at Dusk reflects those still, expansive moments when the landscape begins to soften into shadow, tidal creeks darken gently, and the last traces of light linger across the horizon.
Created using watercolour and ink on paper, the surface is layered with fluid washes and expressive marks that echo the subtle movement of water, reedbeds, and evening sky. Tonal variations shift quietly across the composition, suggesting distant marsh channels, reflected light, and the muted textures of the coastline as day gives way to night.
Sealed with a wax finish and affixed to board, the piece carries a tactile depth and softness that enhances its atmospheric quality. The elongated format echoes the openness of the Norfolk landscape itself — wide skies, low horizons, and the calm horizontal rhythm of marsh and sea.
There is a contemplative stillness within the work — a sense of pause and quiet observation, shaped by the fading light and spaciousness of the coast at dusk.
