Between Wind & Water
Abstract, mixed media landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts
Where shifting elements meet along the edge of land.
An expressive small work inspired by the meeting of forces across the landscapes of the Isle of Skye — where wind moves across open ground and water shapes the edges of land. Between Wind & Water captures that liminal space, where elements overlap and boundaries blur, creating a landscape that is constantly shifting and reforming.
Created through oil paint monoprint and collage, the surface holds a layered, tactile quality that reflects both the fluidity of water and the shaping influence of wind. Soft, diffused passages suggest movement and atmosphere, while more grounded marks hint at the underlying structure of land — ridgelines, shorelines, and forms that emerge and recede in response to the elements.
Subtle tonal shifts move across the piece like passing weather, evoking the interplay between light, air, and tide. There is a quiet energy within the work — a sense of motion held in balance — where nothing is entirely still, yet nothing is fixed.
It speaks of that space in-between: where land meets sea, where wind carries across water, and where the landscape is continually shaped by forces both seen and unseen.
