Abstract, mixed media landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts
Where traces of time linger within the surface of the land.
An expressive small work inspired by the Isle of Skye — where the landscape holds memory within its forms, shaped over time by weather, tide, and the slow persistence of change. The Land Remembers reflects that sense of continuity, where what has passed is never entirely lost, but remains embedded within the land itself.
Created using oil paint monoprint on paper, the surface carries a rich layering of colour and mark-making that brings the tones of Skye to the fore. Deep, atmospheric hues suggest distant hills and coastal edges, while softer passages and overlaid marks hint at what has come before — echoes of movement, weathered traces, and forms partially obscured by time.
There is a quiet depth within the piece — a sense that the landscape is holding onto its own history. Layers build and recede, revealing glimpses of what lies beneath, much like memory surfacing through changing light and shifting weather.
