Memories of my Lincolnshire childhood return to me in fragments: the freshly ploughed fields stretching to the horizon, ridges and furrows catching the last of the light, and above them the great sweep of leaden skies. Always, there was the unmistakable call of the lapwing — a sound that seemed to hang in the air, threading itself through the vastness of the landscape. Those big skies and endless open lands carried a sense of freedom, a deep quietude, and the feeling of having all the space in the world to breathe.
