Broken Horizon
Abstract, mixed media landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts
Where weather interrupts the line between land, sea, and sky.
An expressive work inspired by the Isle of Skye — where shifting weather continually reshapes the landscape and alters the clarity of the horizon. Broken Horizon explores that fleeting moment when cloud, rain, and light fragment the familiar line between sea and sky, creating a landscape that feels both expansive and uncertain.
Created using monoprint collage on mount board, the surface carries layered textures and abstract forms that echo the movement of weather across open coastal spaces. Torn and overlaid elements disrupt the composition like passing cloudbanks and drifting mist, while subtle tonal shifts suggest glimpses of distant land, water, and reflected light emerging through the atmosphere.
There is a quiet tension within the piece — a sense of the horizon appearing and disappearing beneath changing skies. The abstract composition invites the viewer to look slowly, allowing shapes, edges, and spaces to reveal themselves gradually, much like the landscape itself in unsettled weather.
