Edge of the Wild
Abstract, mixed media landscape painting by Carolyn J Roberts
Where landscape loosens into open, untamed space.
An expressive work inspired by the Isle of Skye — where land becomes less defined and nature begins to feel expansive, raw, and quietly uncontained. Edge of the Wild explores that liminal threshold between cultivated form and untamed landscape, where sky presses down on moss-covered ground and the elements continually shape what is seen.
Created using monoprint collage on mount board, the surface is built through layered marks and textured passages that suggest weathered terrain and wind-scoured land. Predominantly held in tones of moss green, the work carries the muted richness of Skye’s vegetation, softened by mist and coastal air. Subtle suggestions of sky break through the composition, offering moments of openness and light within the denser, earthier tones.
Scraped, layered, and inscribed marks run through the piece like traces left by weather and time, echoing the ongoing dialogue between land and atmosphere. There is a quiet tension within the work — a sense of space held at the edge of becoming, where the wildness of the landscape is both contained and continually unfolding.
